Anapana Meditation

Anapana Meditation – Mindfulness of Breathing

What is Anapana Meditation?

Anapana meditation (also called Anapanasati in Pali) is a simple yet profound meditation practice focused on observing the natural breath.

The word comes from two parts:

  • Anapana – breath in and out
  • Sati – mindfulness or awareness

Together, it means mindfulness of breathing.

This practice was first taught by the Buddha more than 2,500 years ago. It is often the very first step in meditation training and forms the foundation for deeper practices such as Vipassana (insight meditation).

Anapana is universal, non-sectarian, and suitable for people of all ages—from children to advanced meditators.

How to Practice Anapana

  1. Posture – Sit cross-legged on the floor, or in any comfortable upright position with your back straight. Keep the body relaxed but alert.
  2. Focus Area – Gently close your eyes and place your attention on the area between the nostrils and the upper lip.
  3. Breath Awareness – Simply observe the natural flow of the breath as it comes in and goes out. Do not try to control or change the breathing. Just notice it as it is—whether deep or shallow, long or short.
  4. Dealing with Thoughts – When the mind wanders, bring your attention back to the breath again and again, without judgment.

👉 Beginners can start with 10–15 minutes once or twice daily, and gradually increase the duration.

Traditional Roots of Anapana

In the Maha-satipatthana Sutta (the Great Discourse on Mindfulness), the Buddha taught Anapana as the very first meditation technique.
By cultivating awareness of the breath, practitioners develop concentration (samadhi), which then becomes the gateway to insight (vipassana).
Over time, this simple practice can lead to deeper meditative states (jhana) and eventually to liberation (nibbana).
